Wart Removal (hands and feet)

Warts are harmless growths which are small in size. They are the result of a viral infection caused by the Human Papilloma Virus family. There are nearly 60 different varieties of the Human Papilloma Virus. Each type prefers a particular part of the body.

Warts normally occur on the skin or on the mucous membrane. Warts can spread from one part of the body to the other and from one person to the other.

As such warts are quite a common problem with children, young adults and women. Normally the virus enters the body through the skin or mucous membrane. Symptoms of warts do not occur for at least 1 to 8 months of infection.

Types of warts

The various types of warts are distinguished by the places on the body where they appear.

They are : -

  • Hand Warts: These grow on the fingers, around the nails and the backs of hands. Often they appear where the skin is broken.
  • Foot Warts or Plantar Warts: These appear on the balls of the feet, the heels and the bottoms of the toes.
  • Flat Warts: These can appear anywhere on the body. These are smaller, smoother and flatter compared to other warts. Also they appear in large numbers on the surface of the body.
  • Genital Warts: This is a form of a sexually transmitted disease and is passed on during sexual activity.

When the Human Papiloma Virus infection spreads and infects the person, certain symptoms begin to show up. The symptoms of warts include the appearance of small bumps on the surface of the skin, which if left untreated can spread some more, grow up to an inch in size and cause a lot of pain. Often these bumps appear in clumps or groups. The surface of the warts may also be scaly at times.

Treatment for warts

Wart removal is often quite a simple procedure. Therefore, one must show the warts to one's doctor immediately after they are seen. If the warts remain untreated for a long time, then it becomes more complicated to treat them. There are also a variety of home remedies or alternative treatments for wart cure and wart removal.

Several wart treatment measures are over the counter treatments and medications. These over the counter treatments are usually in form of lotions or ointments. They help remove the skin where the warts have appeared. At the end of the treatment, the skin with the warts simply falls off, effecting a cure.

Alternative remedies include several products or treatments like plasters which cause the skin to become moist and even saturated with water. This causes the skin layer to peel off, taking the wart with it. Another method of treatment is with the use of duct tape. The warts are kept loosely covered with duct tape for several weeks which causes the warts and the skin to come off.

Treatments that may be prescribed by a medical professional include : -

  • Keratolysis, removal of dead surface skin cells usually using salicylic acid, blistering agents, immune system modifiers, or formaldehyde.
  • Cryosurgery, which involves freezing the wart (generally with liquid nitrogen), after which the wart and surrounding dead skin falls off by itself. Surgical removal of the wart is sometimes also performed. Laser treatment.
  • Imiquimod, a topical cream that helps the body's immune system fight the wart virus by encouraging interferon production.
  • Candida injections at the site of the wart, which also stimulate the body's immune system.
  • Cantharidin, a chemical found naturally in many members of the beetle family Meloidae which causes dermal blistering.

None of these treatments are very effective on single uses except Cryosurgery; the wart often returns after the skin has healed from the treatment, but repeated treatment should get rid of the wart permanently. As they disappear after a few months and maximally a few years, treatment is necessary only if the lesions are painful or are a cosmetic problem.

One review of 52 clinical trials of various cutaneous wart treatments concluded that topical treatments containing salicylic acid were the best supported, with an average cure rate of 75% observed with salicylic acid compared with 48% for placebo in six placebo-controlled trials including a total of 376 participants. The reviewers also concluded that there was little evidence of a significant benefit of cryotherapy over placebo or no treatment.

How to prevent warts

Prevention is the best cure. The only way to prevent warts is to maintain a good hygiene and a balanced diet. The vitamins A, C and E help make the immune system stronger. This can also help one to not get infected with warts.

The best way to get rid of warts and prevent them from causing trouble is to treat them as soon as they appear. This will ensure they don't grow bigger or spread to nearby areas. To prevent the occurrence of ano-genital warts, it's recommended that safe sex practices are used. Being careful with the choice of sexual partners and using condoms can help reduce the risk.

Side Effects

How It Works For each wart, only one treatment is necessary. In persistent cases, repeat the treatment after ten days. Do not treat with Wartner more than three times in total. Consult your physician if three treatments have not lead to improvement. Wartner works as follows: You can recognize a normal wart by its rough, 'cauliflower'-like surface.

The skin turns white when you press the foam applicator on the wart. A slight stinging sensation will occur as a result of the freezing. After removing the foam applicator, color loss and the aching, stinging sensation will rapidly lessen. As a result of freezing, a blister will form under the wart. This may not be visible to the naked eye where there is a thick epidermis. After about 10 days, the frozen skin with the treated wart will fall off. In the meantime, new skin will have formed under the blister.

FAQ's

Q. What is cryotherapy wart removal ?

Cryotherapy is a procedure to treat your wart by freezing it. This is done by using cryogen (freezing chemical), commonly liquid nitrogen. A wart is a thickened lump (growth) caused by a virus (germ) called human papilloma virus or HPV. It may appear on any area of your skin. This includes your face, hands, fingers, feet, and genital area (penis, vagina, or anus). A wart may also occur on the tissue lining the inside of your genitals.

You may need cryotherapy treatments every 1 to 4 weeks. You may need a total of 3 to 4 treatments to get rid of your wart. Your caregiver will tell you how many treatments you may need, and when you should have them. It may take 1 to 3 months for your wart to go away. Cryotherapy may also be used with other treatments, such as medicine, to treat your wart faster.

Q. What is keratolytic wart removal ?

A wart is an infection caused by a virus (germ) called human papilloma virus (HPV). A wart appears as a thickened lump (growth) on an area of your skin. Your wart may have bumpy layers of rough skin around it call keratin. Common areas for warts to grow are your face, hands, fingers, feet, and genital area (penis, vagina, or anus). Warts may also grow on the tissue that lines the inside of your anus. Females may also get warts on the tissue lining of their vagina.

Keratolytic wart removal uses medicine that peels away the infected skin that forms your wart. Once your skin peels away, you may have mild swelling and irritation. When this happens, your immune system (body defense) attacks and tries to kill the virus.

Different kinds of keratolytic medicine may be used depending on the kind of wart you have. The medicine may come in liquid or gel form, or as a plaster patch. Your caregiver will work with you to decide which medicine is right for you. You may need many medicine treatments before your wart goes away. Having your wart treated may prevent it from spreading or being passed on to others.
