A generous bust isn't always an asset. Many women feel self conscious and are troubled by back and shoulder pain. Whilst adding to your general comfort and boosting self esteem, a breast reduction can create a more uplifted and firmer appearance.
Breast Reduction Surgery
Many women with very large breasts suffer physical discomfort, bad posture and embarrassment. More and more women are now opting for breast reduction surgery.
Having very large breasts can cause back and breast pain as well as low self-esteem. You may be very self-conscious and resort to wearing loose clothing to conceal your shape. Breast reduction surgery can help restore proportion to your body, help you carry out those activities that you couldn't before and regain any lost self-confidence.
The Breast Reduction Procedure
The breast reduction operation involves the removal of fat and excess skin to create a great new size and shape. The cosmetic surgeon will reposition your nipple and areola to give the breast a natural appearance.
Q. Who is best for Breast Reduction ?
Breast Reduction can improve your appearance and your self-confidence. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations, and feel free to discuss them thoroughly during your consultation.
The best candidates for Breast Reduction are women with breasts that are too large in proportion to their body frame, women with pendulous breasts with nipples that point downward, woman with a large size difference between breasts, women with back, neck or shoulder pain caused by breast weight, women who suffer skin irritation beneath the breasts, women who must restrict their physical activity or the way they dress due to the size and weight of their breasts or women with self-consciousness about the largeness of their breasts.
Breast Reduction can be performed at any age, but waiting until breast development has stopped is usually recommended. Pregnancy and breast-feeding may have significant and unpredictable effects on the size and shape of your breasts. Nevertheless, many women decide to undergo Breast Reduction before having children and feel that they can address any subsequent changes later. If you plan to breast-feed in the future, you should discuss this with your Plastic Surgeon.
During the consultation, another important factor to consider is the desired breast size as well as anything else about your breasts that you would like to see improved. This will help us understand your expectations and determine whether they realistically can be achieved.
Q. Who Should Not Have Breast Reduction Surgery ?
Breast reduction surgery is not recommended for women with : -
Breast cancer
Uncontrolled diabetes
Cellulitis (infection of the soft tissue of the breast)
Hardened breast skin
Dry or broken breast skin
Surgery
Individual factors and personal preferences will determine the specific technique selected to reduce the size of your breasts. The most common method of reducing the breasts involves three incisions. One incision is made around the areola. Another runs vertically from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease underneath the breast. The third incision follows the natural curve of the breast crease.

After the removal of the excess breast tissue, fat and skin, the nipple and areola are shifted to a higher position. The areola, which in large breasts usually has been stretched, also is reduced in size. Skin that was formerly located above the nipple is brought down and together to reshape the breast.
Usually, the nipples and areolas remain attached to underlying mounds of tissue, and this allows for the preservation of sensation. The ability to breast-feed may also be preserved by this method, although this cannot be guaranteed.
There are many variations to the design of the incisions for Breast Reduction. The size and shape of your breasts, as well as the desired amount of reduction, are factors that will help us determine the best technique for you.
Rarely, if your breasts are extremely large, the nipples and areolas may need to be completely detached before they are shifted to a higher level. In such a case, you will need to have made the decision to sacrifice sensation and the possibility of breast-feeding in order to achieve your desired breast size.
Side Effects
Possible bleeding, infection or reaction to the anesthesia. Some patients develop small sores around the nipples after the procedure, but can be treated with antibiotic creams.
Recovery
It may take 6 months to a year for breasts to settle into their new shape, but swelling and bruising will disappear in the first few weeks. May ache for a couple of weeks. Should avoid lifting or pushing anything heavy for 3 to 4 weeks. Back to work (if not too strenuous) and social activities: about 2 weeks.
What Are The Risks Of Breast Reduction Surgery ?
The breast reduction procedure is normally safe. But as with any surgical procedure, there are risks relating to the procedure itself or to the anesthetic. Any early sign of infection will be vigorously treated, and if bleeding occurs postoperatively, it will be immediately dealt with.
Some people who have breast reduction surgery experience:
Delayed wound healing. Noticeable, permanent scars on the breasts. The breast reduction procedure will leave scars, but some women have a greater tendency to produce scar tissue than others do. Women who smoke are more likely to heal slowly and develop prominent scars.
Small sores around the nipples following surgery. These sores can be treated with antibiotic cream.
Breasts that are slightly mismatched or nipples that are unevenly positioned.
Inability to breast-feed because most of the milk ducts leading to the nipple are removed.
Permanent loss of feeling in the nipples or breasts.
Loss of blood supply to the nipple and areola, which can lead to tissue death. This complication is rare, and the nipple and areola can usually be rebuilt from skin grafts taken from other parts of the body.
Infection, which in very rare cases can lead to death if it is not effectively treated.
What are the indications for breast reduction surgery ?
Breast reduction surgery is for women who have large breasts and want to resolve one or more of the following associated problems : -
Chronic back, neck and shoulder pain
Poor posture
Skin rash under the breasts
Deep grooves in the shoulders from bra strap pressure
Restricted levels of activity
Low self-esteem
Difficulty wearing or fitting into certain bras and clothing
You can have breast reduction surgery at any age, but it's generally advisable to wait until you're at least age 20, by which time your breasts are likely to be fully developed. However, sometimes surgery is performed in teens who suffer significant emotional and psychological effects of having too-large breasts.
If you want children, consider postponing breast reduction surgery until you've had them. Changes to breast tissue during pregnancy could alter your surgical results. Also, after the surgery, breast-feeding may be difficult.
