Baby Shiva is an 8 month old infant, who is first born child of a couple from Khalle Alsherbagh of Kurnool district. The child was born preterm with a very low birth weight of 1.75 kilograms.
He was noted to have bluish discoloration and not feeding well at the breast. Initial evaluation was done at a local hospital where they were advised that no procedure could be done until he is 1-2 years of age.
He was seen here at Apollo Hospitals Jubilee Hills on December 4th and was referred here on the basis of the ongoing government program for children with congenital heart disease. He was extremely sick, lethargic and had very with low Oxygen saturation and was admitted to the pediatric cardiac ICU. Here he was ventilated and stabilized. Cardiac evaluation showed a complex heart disease called VSD Pulmonary Atresia.
There was no pulmonary valve in him and life was dependent on a blood flowing into the lungs from a vessel called patent ductus arterious. This had become very narrow and this was endangering the life of the child. These children are usually stabilized and undergo a shunt operation. The general condition of the child was not stable for surgery and he was taken to the cardiac cath lab and the narrow vessel was opened up with a Stent.
This is a novel procedure called PDA stenting and is probably one of the first in this part of the country.The child recovered overnight and the mechanical ventilation was discontinued over the next 24 hours. The child is now active, feeding well and awaiting discharge in the ward.
