The ENT Team of Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad led by Dr.E.C.Vinay Kumar performed the highest number of cochlear implants in a day on 24th October, 2008. This is a unique achievement and there is no documented evidence of similar numbers being performed any where else in the world.
Hearing impairment - Indian scenario
4 out of every 1000 children born in India have hearing impairment and 1 of these four will benefit from cochlear implantation. However less than 1% of the children who need cochlear implantation are having the benefit of this procedure resulting in a huge load of handicapped population in the community.
Cochlear Implantation in India
Though the procedure is being performed for over 10 years in the country, less than 20 centers are actively involved with this program. All the centers in India put together perform less than 2500 surgeries per annum, leaving behind a huge number of patients who need the procedure. It is estimated that there is a back log of over 1.5 million patients who need this procedure in the country.
This is because of inadequate awareness in the community and the cost of the procedure. Identifying a child with hearing impairment is a challenge and majority of the children go unnoticed during the first 2 years of life during which the procedure produces best results. Screening every child born for hearing impairment is the only answer and the Governments (central and state) must make this a part of the routine health services. Each implant costs about Rs.5 lakhs and affordability is a major issue even for those who are diagnosed.
Cochlear Implants - Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad
Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad is amongst the first institutions in the country to perform cochlear implant surgery in the country. The first case was performed in 1996 and ever since they have been working hard on creating the ideal environment to tackle the problem in the country. It took them 12 years to finish 100 cases (they did their 100th case in January, 2008. However they completed the next hundred in just 10 months. 24th October 2008 is a historic day as the ENT team performed 18 surgeries in a single day and also completed 200 cochlear implant surgeries at this hospital, both of which are extremely rare feats.
Having struggled to create awareness in the community for over 10 years, we realized that a major event was required to make it happen. We decided to do the highest number of cases on a singe day to demonstrate our capability to do the procedures, our readiness to handle the volumes, and most importantly highlight a mechanism that makes the procedure affordable.
Government of Andhra Pradesh
Government of AP headed by Dr.Y.S.Rajashekara Reddy is the first Government in the country to identify this problem and introduce a mechanism which makes the expensive procedure to every handicapped child in the State. The Government of Andhra Pradesh bears the entire cost of the procedure.

We sincerely hope that this effort propels the problem of hearing impairment to the forefront and creates the much needed awareness in the community. It will also let the world know about our capability.
