The Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Center has tied up with the US-based University of Minnesota Physicians (UMP) for Bone Marrow Transplants at the Centre. The hospital has conducted 27 bone marrow transplants(BMT) leading healthcare provider and one of the leading institutions in the world in bone marrow transplants is another step in changing the lives of several patients in India.
The world's first ever successful human bone marrow transplant was performed at the University of Minnesota for an infant with an immune deficiency syndrome in 1968. Today they conduct one of the highest numbers of BMT's in the world. The university also has several biomedical and technological firsts to its credit, right from open-heart surgery and cardiovascular devices to liver transplants, stem cell therapy, and functional MRI of the brain.
Manipal Hospital has put in place the UMP Protocols for the BMT Transplant Center in its Cancer Center. The doctors in the two institutions are in direct consultation with each other over tele-video conferencing with medical direction provided by senior physicians from UMP's BMT program.
Dr. Daniel Weisdorf the Director of University of Minnesota Physicians, leads the UMP team in USA and the BMT team at Manipal comprehensive Center consists of Dr. Ashish Dixit, who has done his DM in Clinical Haematology form AIIMS, New Delhi and his specialty lies in both benign haematology and haematological oncology and Dr. AmitRauthan, who has done his DM in medical oncology from Gujarat Cancer & Research Institution, Ahmadabad. He has also worked in the Stem Cell Transplant program at G..C.R.I Ahmedabad.
At Manipal Hospital, 8 out of the 27 BMTs have been allogeneic transplants and the remaining 19 are autologous transplants. Allogeneic transplants require more expertise as they are much more challenging transplants. Here stem cells are taken from a donor (the donor is usually a sibling) who is fully matched for their HLA antigens. The autologous transplants use the stem cells from the patient himself.
Bone Marrow Transplants are done when the patient suffers from blood disorders (cancerous and benign) and other solid tumors.
Allogeneic transplants have been done at Manipal Hospital for diseases like Anemia and Thalessemia which are non cancerous or benign blood disorders and Acute Myeloid Leukemia which is a type of blood cancer. Out of the 8 allogeneic transplants that were done, 5 transplants were done for children and the youngest child was only 3.5 years of age.
The autologous BMT that were done at Manipal Hospital include adults with Multiple Myeloma and Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL) which are types of blood cancer. Children with solid tumors like Neuroblastoma and Ewing's Sarcoma have also been transplanted at Manipal hospital.
Manipal has conducted the BMT program successfully and the results have been at par with any of the best centers in the world. The long term objective of this collaboration is to enable Manipal Hospital to step up to the next level of conducting Umbilical cord blood and unrelated donor transplants successfully in future.
