Medical Milestones of the Fortis Hospital, Mohali

Vascular Surgery Fortis Hospital India, Venous Thrombectomy, Heart Surgery, Carotid Endarterectomy Rotary project gives Pakistani toddler fresh lease of life Hindustan Times HT Chandigarh Live

A RARE cardiac surgery was performed recently on 11-month-old Junaid of Pakistan at the Fortis Hospital here. The surgery, performed by hospital executive director Dr. T.S. Mahant, was done under the Rotary Heartline Project of Rotary Heartline Project of Rotary Club, Chandigarh, under which 136 such surgeries have been done since 1999 on children from economically weaker sections, informed Padamshree Rajendra K. Saboo, the world president of Rotary International.

The club started this project in association with PGIMER and it was in March this year that the Rotary Club joined hands with Fortis Hospital for conducting surgeries on children below one years of age. This is fourth such surgery performed at Fortis Healthcare by Dr T.S. Mahant. Of the 136 children on whom surgeries were performed, nine included from Pakistan, five from Uganda and one each from Afganistan and Nepal, informed Charanjit Singh, president of the Rotary Club, Chandigarh.

Dr Mahant said the child, who had a hole in his heart since birth, was operated on June 20 and would now be able to lead a normal life, as he had progressed well after the surgery.

Aizaz Ali, a milkman in a village near Nawabshah in Karachi, learnt about the disease of his child after Zunaid contracted fever. Doctors there informed him about the Heartline project, following which he arrived here along with his wife Rehana and son.

While Rotarians in Pakistan made transportation arrangements for the trio to reach India, the Chandigarh Rotary Club provided Rs 65,000 assistance to meet various medical expenses. Besides, free medical services were provided by Fortis hospital.

Dr Mahant said 20 per cent of the total cardiology cases related to children suffering from congenital cardiac disease. He hailed the efforts made by Chandigarh Rotary Club for initiating such a noble project, thereby saving lives of poor children.

Fortis doc to present research paper

27th November 2007

DR. PANKAJ Garg, senior consultant of laparoscopic and general surgery at Fortis Hospital, has been selected for presenting his research in the 'Best Research Paper' category at the annual conference of Association of Surgeons of India.

Dr Garg has compared treatment of anal fistula through minimally-invasive technique to the traditional surgical procedure. Anal Fistula is an abnormal passage between the interior of the anal canal and the skin surface. It is a perplexing disease affecting lakhs of people all over the world. "Conventionally surgery involved opening of fistula tract leading to large wound in the buttock region. This leaves the patient with 1t of pain in the postoperative period and he would require dressings for 4-6 weeks," said Dr Garg.

The new method requires placement of anal fistula plug in anal fistula by a special technique. Study done by Dr Garg showed that this method was more effective. "The best aspect of this method is that it involves no cutting at all. So there is minimal post-operative wound and pain. The patient can go back to work the same day" he said.
