Dental veneers are custom-designed shells of tooth-like ceramic material that, when applied over the surface of a tooth, can cover worn tooth enamel, uneven tooth alignment, or spacing and chips or cracks. Dental veneers fall into the category of cosmetic dentistry because they create a bright, white smile with beautifully aligned, shapely teeth. Even better, the translucent ceramic quality of today's veneers provides a more natural look than what's been available in the past.
Types of Tooth Veneer Procedures
There are two tooth veneers procedures available that correct discoloration of the teeth by removing the brown and yellow staining. While each work effectively, there are advantages and disadvantages to each procedure dependent upon your objectives and commitment to the processes. The type of procedures available should be discussed with your cosmetic dentist, and they will recommend the most appropriate tooth veneers procedure.
Composite Veneer Procedure : - Composite (direct) veneers are usually performed in a single visit to your cosmetic dentist. The procedure is an application of a bond and enamel directly to the tooth's surface.
Porcelain Veneer Procedure : - Porcelain (indirect) veneers are a very thin porcelain material. Usually porcelain veneers require two visits and also require a dental laboratory to create the final tooth restoration piece.
Lumineer Porcelain Veneer Procedure : - Made of Cerinate porcelain, Lumineers are a new type of porcelain veneers. They are contact lens-thin, roughly .2 mm thick. Little to no tooth reduction in most cases is necessary with this type of veneer and anesthetics or numbing shots are not needed.
Porcelain veneers are probably the most esthetic means of creating a more pleasing and beautiful smile. Porcelain veneers require a minimal amount of tooth reduction (approximately .5 mm - 1mm) and are, therefore, a more conservative restoration than a crown. Porcelain veneers allow us to alter tooth position, shape, size and color. They are not the only alternative for aesthetic improvements, but are truly a remarkable restoration when they are the treatment of choice.
It's a porcelain laminate (a thin layer of porcelain) that is adhered to the front surface of the tooth. Porcelain veneers are a quick way to correct tooth color, shape and alignment. Porcelain veneers can add tooth length, width, color and aesthetic shape. Porcelain veneers can reshape your smile in as little as two appointments. The laboratory time required for the fabrication of a Porcelain Veneer is approximately two weeks. Beautiful temporaries are provided during the laboratory fabrication of the permanent Porcelain Veneers.
Procedure
The veneer procedure occurs in two steps. You and your cosmetic dentist will choose the color of veneer that will best suit your existing teeth. The dentist will then shape any chips or crooked edges and remove a small portion of the enamel on the teeth to make room for the veneers. You may receive local anesthetic at this point to minimize any discomfort. An impression of your reshaped teeth will then be made to help the laboratory form your custom individual veneers
About two weeks later on your second visit, a mild chemical will be applied to your teeth to make the veneers adhere more strongly. Using composite resin cement, the veneers will then be fitted one by one to the front of your teeth to fashion your new smile. If the veneers need any subtle reshaping, this can be done in the same session. As soon as the veneers have been put in place, your teeth will be prepared for smiling, talking and eating. You can expect veneer to last up to 15 years.
Recovery
Because this is a non-invasive cosmetic dentistry treatment, you and your new teeth should be ready to go with little or no discomfort at all. Your dentist will strongly recommend that you do not chew on hard objects such as your nails, ice or put any abnormal pressure on your teeth.
Risk
There are few risks involved in the veneer process, but you should be aware that the veneering process is not reversible. Because you cannot change the color of veneers once in place, if you plan on whitening your teeth, you must do so prior to getting veneers.
Veneers may not be an option for those with seriously damaged or diseased teeth as this affects the structural integrity of teeth and may no work with bonding agents. Also, veneers may not be a good choice for individuals who grind and clench their teeth, as veneers may crack or chip. Choosing the right cosmetic dentistry procedure for you should be done with an experienced and qualified dental professional.
