PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:
I am presently working as a senior consultant in Fortis Malar Hospital, Chennai. I am working here since Jan 2010 and am independently attending to my surgeries and patient management. I am practicing and promoting minimal Invasive Brain and Spine surgery in this department. This is in continuation of the minimally invasive surgeries which I was practicing as a teaching faculty at Narayana Medical College and Hospital, Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, India. The department has four working neurosurgeons and presently performs about 30 surgeries per monte also have 3 neurologists and 4 neuro intensivists manning two fully equipped neuro ICUs. The neurosurgery theatre is fully equipped with state of art operative equipment and well trained OT and ICU staff. As a consultant in the department with an independent OPD and OT, I am managing neurosurgical emergencies along with elective cases. Apart from performing surgeries and providing quality patient care, we also take part in teaching Junior neurosurgeons and building the department. Apart from the various complex cranial and spinal surgeries,
including skull base, pituitary and aneurysms, pediatric tumors and all kinds of spinal fixation and surgeries, I have special interest in performing Minimal Invasive Brian and spine surgeries. These include endoscopic ventriculostomies, pituitary tumors, and endoscopic discectomies, kyphoplasty for osteoporotic fractures and percutaneous spinal fixation for spondylolysis and listhesis.
I have attained my basic neurosurgical training from Nizam’s Institute of Medical
Sciences. The department has a patient occupancy of about 80 patients at any given point of time. The hospital is a superspeciality government run postgraduate training Institute, considered to be the premium hospital in the state catering to about 100 million population. The neurosurgery department boasts of performing about 1800 cases per annum comprising of neurovascular, skull base, functional, Spine, Neurooncology and pediatric neurosurgery. The department has a faculty of nine teaching staff including three professors who have their own subspecialization interests.
I am adequately exposed to all major surgical approaches to skull base and neurovascular lesions. I have exposure to aneurysm clippings, AVMs and also bypass procedures. I am also trained to manage brain and spinal emergencies independently. I have also been exposed to spine surgeries including CVJ, transthoracic and transabdominal procedures for spinal instrumentations. I have also been exposed to Functional neurosurgery like epilepsy surgeries, Deep Brain Stimulation and spasticity corrective surgeries.
After completing my neurosurgical training in Jan 2007, I worked as a clinical associate in PD Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai till Sept 2007. The hospital is a private owned super speciality hospital with about 50 in patients at a point of time. The department has three consultants (Dr. BK Misra, Dr. Milind Sankhe, and Dr. Ketan Desai) who have their own subspecializations. Dr Misra has special interest in Skull base and Neurovascular surgeries. Dr. Milind Sankhe has subspecialised in Functional neurosurgery and Dr. Ketan Desai in brachial plexus injuries and peripheral nerve injuries. The department is fully equipped with state of art infrastructure. I have also been exposed to gamma knife radiosurgery which was unavailable in my training Institute. After my further training in PD Hinduja Hospital, I joined Narayana Medical College, Nellore as an assistant professor in the department. I was catering to elective and emergency surgeries performing about 30 cases per month independently. I developed a special interest in Minimal Invasive spine and cranial surgeries and had a chance to work with Dr. Nannapaneni Ravindra, Cardiff, UK, where I had a good exposure to minimal Invasive surgeries.
